Argentina is seeking to attract investment in artificial intelligence data centres, with President Javier Milei promising a hands-off approach to AI regulation, the Associated Press reported on 2 November.
The push comes as communities and policymakers in other parts of the world debate the energy use and environmental impact of the large computing facilities. According to AP, visitor logs show technology industry figures have met the president and his aides in recent months. Meetings alone do not establish investment commitments.
Polish renewable energy company Green Capital plans a $3 billion data centre in Patagonia for AI computing, AP reported. A company representative said the planned facility had yet to secure a customer. It remains a proposed project, not an operating centre.
The prospect of new investment also raises questions about oversight. The AP report cited a University of Córdoba computer science professor who expressed concern about the consequences of an absence of rules.
