Learner Tien advanced to the second round of the Paris Masters by defeating Adolfo Daniel Vallejo 6–3, 5–7, 7–5 on November 3. The American needed two hours and 20 minutes to get past the Paraguayan lucky loser.

Tien had originally been drawn against Stefanos Tsitsipas, but Vallejo entered the match after the Greek withdrew. The replacement opponent pushed the 15th seed through three sets before Tien secured the final two-game margin.

The completed Tennis.com scorecard recorded five breaks of serve for Tien and four for Vallejo, underlining how different this contest was from a straightforward serving duel. Tien hit 10 aces against Vallejo’s two and saved seven of the 11 break points he faced.

Vallejo had beaten Tien in straight sets at Madrid earlier this season. This time the American recovered after dropping the second set and kept his Paris campaign alive. Tien’s next opponent is Luca Van Assche, with a place in the third round at stake.
