A standard operating procedure for organic certification of fisheries in the Northeastern region was launched in Mangan, Sikkim, on November 2, the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying said. Read the official announcement.

The ministry said the programme also included the inauguration of fisheries projects worth ₹375 lakh, or ₹3.75 crore, under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana. The infrastructure covered hatcheries, feed mills and cold storage, alongside production systems that manage and reuse water.

The new certification procedure is intended to support organic production and traceability through the supply chain. The ministry highlighted Sikkim's existing Soreng organic fisheries cluster, whose focus includes carp and trout.

For producers and food businesses, the announcement concerns production standards and supply-chain infrastructure. It does not establish a guaranteed selling price, export order or certification for every fish farm in the state. The detailed certification process should be checked against the published procedure and guidance from the fisheries department.
