Sikkim’s dairy sector received new testing and traceability facilities on November 3, when Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh inaugurated a Sikkim Milk Union microbiology laboratory and launched a Churpi traceability initiative in Gangtok, the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying said.

A second microbiology laboratory at Karfectar was inaugurated virtually. The ministry said the testing facilities are intended to strengthen dairy-quality assessment, while the Churpi initiative aims to improve the traditional product’s traceability and market identity.

The programme also included Fodder Plus products developed by farmer producer organisations and registration certificates for five new dairy cooperative societies.

Singh announced plans for a Centre of Excellence focused on indigenous Siri cattle and invited a formal proposal from the state. He also said the National Dairy Development Board would finance and modernise the dairy processing plant in Mangan. Those announcements concern proposed future work, rather than facilities completed at the November 3 event.
