India’s Rajkumari Lanchenbi Chanu won bronze in the women’s changquan combined event at the Dakar Youth Olympic Games on November 3, securing a podium finish during wushu’s debut as a medal sport at the Games.
Senegal’s Agence de Presse Sénégalaise, reporting from the finals at the Diamniadio exhibition centre, confirmed that Egypt’s Sondos Sonbol took gold and Venezuela’s Valeria Frannerys Dudamel Alvarado won silver, ahead of Chanu.
ANI’s report identified the result as India’s first Youth Olympic medal in wushu. It said Chanu moved into third place after her changquan performance.
The International Wushu Federation’s event guide explains that changquan combined brings together changquan and gunshu routines, with the two results determining the final ranking. Wushu’s programme ran from November 1 to 3 at Dakar Expo Center.
The competition featured four events: men’s and women’s changquan combined, alongside men’s and women’s taijiquan combined. Chanu’s bronze placed India among the medal-winning nations at the sport’s inaugural Youth Olympic competition.
