Robin Montgomery knocked fourth seed Panna Udvardy out of the Chennai Open on Tuesday, November 3, winning 6–4, 1–6, 6–1 to reach the second round.
The American took the opening set before Udvardy levelled the match by conceding just one game in the second. Montgomery then reversed that score in the deciding set to complete the win on Court 2.
The result was Udvardy’s fourth consecutive tour defeat, according to the WTA. The Hungarian entered the tournament ranked 86th, while Montgomery was No. 151 in Tennis.com’s match record.
Montgomery will next play Belgium’s Jeline Vandromme, who beat Japanese qualifier Kyoka Okamura 7–5, 6–1 in another first-round match. It was Vandromme’s main-draw debut on the WTA Tour.
The WTA 250 tournament has a 32-player singles draw, with matches on the outdoor hard courts of Chennai’s SDAT Tennis Stadium. Play continues through November 8.
