Joanna Garland began her Chennai Open campaign with a 6–3, 6–4 victory over Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann on Tuesday, November 3, moving into the second round of the WTA 250 tournament.
The Taiwanese player needed one hour and 47 minutes to complete the win, according to the WTA’s match record. She finished on her fourth match point, having missed three earlier opportunities before a brief rain delay.
Teichmann, ranked No. 147 and 49 places above Garland, lost serve early in both sets but recovered ground in the second. A further break put Garland ahead 5–4, and she completed the match without needing a deciding set, Swiss outlet Watson reported.
Garland returns to a tournament where she reached her first WTA Tour semifinal in 2025. This year’s Chennai Open runs from November 2 to 8 on the outdoor hard courts at SDAT Tennis Stadium.
