The first International Maize Conference began in Hyderabad on 2 November, bringing together researchers, policymakers, agricultural institutions and industry representatives, India’s Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare said.

The three-day meeting at the JD Convention Centre is scheduled to continue through 4 November. Its discussions cover maize research and productivity as well as the crop’s uses in food, animal feed, fodder and energy.

According to the ministry, the conference has highlighted higher-yielding varieties and hybrids, nutritional quality, efficient resource use, mechanisation and seed systems. Speakers also emphasised translating research into improved farm profitability and livelihoods.

The meeting aims to help develop a roadmap for a productive and sustainable maize sector. The ministry’s account describes the conference’s aims and discussions; it does not establish that proposed outcomes have already been achieved.
