India ranks third in the World Travel & Tourism Council’s newly released Travel & Tourism Power Index, behind the United States and China. The ranking uses 2024 data and combines measures of tourism GDP, employment and investment.
The report, released on November 3, gives India an overall power score of 51.9. Its third-place position is unchanged from the report’s comparison with 2019.
Developed with Oxford Economics, the framework also includes separate indices for environmental efficiency and employment opportunities. It is therefore not a ranking of the best holiday destinations or a measure of visitor satisfaction.
The research examines 184 economies, while its methodology says 158 are included in the published 2024 index results after exclusions. The top 20 power-index performers account for 81% of global tourism GDP in 2024.
The findings, also reported by Oman Observer, underline why tourism’s economic scale should be considered alongside its environmental footprint and employment outcomes.
