India beat New Zealand by five wickets under the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern method in the first one-day international at Eden Park, Auckland, on November 4. The visitors finished on 143 for five in 22.4 overs after rain reduced their chase to a target of 143 from 32 overs.

Virat Kohli led the reply with 74 from 51 balls, striking 13 fours and a six. Captain Shubman Gill contributed 37, and their second-wicket partnership of 113 steadied India after Rohit Sharma departed without scoring.

New Zealand threatened a late comeback through Jacob Duffy, who took three wickets for 49 runs. India slipped from 114 for one to 136 for five before KL Rahul and Naman Dhir completed the chase. Dhir struck the winning boundary off Nathan Smith.

Earlier, New Zealand were dismissed for 185 in 40.2 overs. Arshdeep Singh claimed four wickets for 70, Gurnoor Brar took three for 44 and Anshul Kamboj returned two for 22. India now lead the five-match series 1–0.
